The letter itself never reaches us
Finding your MP and preparing a letter happens entirely inside your web browser. The suburb list, the electorate boundaries and the MP contact details are all downloaded to your device when the page loads, and the letter is assembled there.
The words you write and the finished letter are never transmitted to us and are never stored, under any circumstances. When you press one of the send or copy buttons, the letter is handed straight to your own email program. We are not in that loop, we never see the message, and we cannot tell whether you sent it.
Your name, phone number and street address are used to write the letter locally in your browser. They are only ever sent to us in the one case set out below: you entered an email address and left the consent box ticked. Leave that box unticked, or the email field empty, and they stay on your device like the letter does.
You can verify this: disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded. Finding your MP and drafting the letter keeps working with nothing to send anywhere.
What the counters record
When someone opens or copies a finished letter, we record four things:
- which electorate the letter was addressed to;
- how many words it ran to;
- which button was used; and
- a random identifier for that draft, so one letter cannot be counted twice.
None of that identifies you. There is no name, no email address, no letter text and no account attached to it.
We also store a one-way cryptographic hash of your IP address — not the address itself. It exists solely to stop one person or script inflating the public counters, and it cannot be reversed to recover your IP address or your location.
There are no third-party analytics, no advertising trackers, no cookies and no social media pixels anywhere on this site.
Your details — the only personal information we hold
In the "Your details" step there is an email field and a consent box. That box is ticked by default. We tell you that plainly because you should know it: if you would rather we kept nothing about you, untick it, and the letter tool works in exactly the same way.
If you leave your email blank, nothing about you is stored regardless of the box.
If you enter an email and leave the box ticked, then at the moment you open or copy your finished letter we store:
- your email address;
- whatever you entered in that step — your name, phone number, street address and licence type — and none of it is required;
- your suburb, postcode and electorate, and which MP you wrote to, so updates can be relevant to you;
- the exact wording of the consent you agreed to, with the date and time; and
- a hashed IP address and a unique unsubscribe token.
The page shows you the specific values it is about to save, in plain words, before you act on the letter.
The letter itself is never stored, whatever you choose here.
What we use it for
Your email address is used to contact you about the NSW firearms laws: what is changing, what is happening in Parliament, opportunities to make a submission, and occasions where your help with this campaign would make a difference. Your other details are used to make that contact relevant to you and your electorate.
You will not be sent marketing. We do not advertise products or services to this list, and we do not use it for anything unrelated to these laws.
We do not sell, rent, trade or otherwise disclose your information to anyone. It is not shared with political parties, lobby groups, advertisers or data brokers. The only third parties involved are the infrastructure providers that run the site — Vercel, which hosts it, and Neon, which stores the database. They process the data on our behalf and do not use it for their own purposes.
Where your data lives. The database is hosted in Sydney and the code that serves this site runs from Sydney. Both providers are United States companies, so their staff could in principle access the systems they operate for us; your details are encrypted in the database, and the key is held separately from it.
Unsubscribing, and getting your data back or deleted
Every update email carries a one-click unsubscribe link. Using it stops all further email immediately.
Under the Australian Privacy Principles you may also ask us to tell you what we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it entirely. Email privacy@emailyourlocalmp.com and we will action it. We aim to respond within 30 days.
We keep subscriber details only while the campaign is active and you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe, your record is marked inactive and no further email is sent; ask us and we will delete it outright.
Security, and honest limits
The site is served over HTTPS, the database sits behind credentials that are never exposed to your browser, and the subscriber list is not readable through any public address on this site.
No system is perfectly secure, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. The practical protection here is that we hold very little: no passwords, no payment details, no identity documents, and nothing at all about the people who only use the letter tool.

For any privacy question or complaint, contact privacy@emailyourlocalmp.com. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
If this policy changes, the "last updated" date above changes with it, and any change that affects how we use information already collected will be notified to subscribers by email first.
